How to Use Stepped Care to Improve Mental Health

In theory, the majority of patients with common mental health problems would initially access a brief and low intensity intervention that may be effective to alleviate their symptoms. Those for whom these brief interventions are not effective then have the opportunity to be stepped up to more traditional empirically supported psychotherapies. In the literature, this stepped care system has been described as a self-correcting model where people eventually receive the intervention that meets their needs. And it has been argued that it is an efficient, cost-effective way to organize scarce resources for large populations.
