Galileo's Observations on the Moon
Galileo's observations directly challenged that idea. Through the telescope, he could see what seemed like mountains and valleys. There were huge indentations in the moon's surface that he likened to Earth's seas. This heavenly body was not some smooth, polished surface. It had topography. The next key observation had to do with the stars. When Galileo turned his telescope towards the Milky Way, he was able to see that it was in fact made up of thousands of individual stars. Furthermore, there were stars that appeared in his telescope that could not be seen with the naked eye. But who would get to interpret these findings? Would the church get to say what all this meant?
