Ludendorf and Hindenburg understood that if they kept fighting, they would be invaded. So to prevent the inevitable occupation, both the generals calculated it made sense to surrender. Adolf Hitler will go on to write about his time in the military hospital in Mein Kampf. He'll claim that at the moment he receives the news of the armistice, he's overcome with anger.
