In 1940, the US had not yet joined World War II. The Hercules powder plant in New Jersey was making gunpowder for the US army. On September 12, 1940, two separate explosions ripped through the factory and killed 52 people. More than half of the plant's entire workforce was either injured or killed. It was one of the worst disasters of its kind in the United States.
