What Would Happen if We Had a Gamma Ray Burst?

If a gamma ray burst hit the Earth from much closer, then basically that would sterilize the surface of the Earth. I was trying to think what would happen. Ultimately, perhaps only bacteria. It's amazingly unlikely. And it would have to be, you know, not only pretty intense, but very, very close. But the bottom line is distance matters.
