10 years ago, when my book How Dogs Love Us came out, I wrote an op-ed for the New York Times titled Dogs are People Too. A judge in New York cited that in a divorce proceedings where the couple was arguing over the custody of their dog. Alaska was the first state to change their animal welfare laws.
