Pantothenic acid is named after the Greek word pandos, which means everything everywhere. The Institute of Medicine's Food and Nutrition Board made the DRI in 1998 because there was not enough evidence to set an RDA or recommended dietary allowance. Because we believe that no one is ever naturally deficient in pentathenic acid, we don't really look for its deficiency anywhere. We know a lot about what it does in the body, but how much do we need? What are the things that make us need more? How do we smack numbers on this and decide what to eat?"
