The Immortality of the Soul
Professor Campbell points out that a fundamental difference between the east and the west is found in the individual's relationship to societal structures, especially roles. The role one is to play is determined by the merit one has or has not accrued in their previous lives. In systems like the caste system, the individual's willingness to sacrifice one's individuality, one's ego, to the role is crucial. Without this sacrifice of individuality, Campbell says, the whole culture falls apart.
