The mechanical clock was invented around 14 hundred a d and it has been called, by some historians, the mother of inventions. For the first time ever, people were able to measure time with precision. Before that, you had hour glasses and sun dials, and they give you like, an approximation of time. But nothing came even remotely close to the mechanical clock. It allowed these guys, for the first time, to manage hundreds of people working in mills and factories,. The industrial revolution ruined our understanding of time.
