Are You Giving Instrumental Defenses of the Market?
I see how Machiavelli and Hobbes are giving instrumental defenses of the market, but I also think that other thinkers do too. So for example, market society is simply more likely to be more efficient or a market society will be less corrupt because lawmakers have less power. All those ideas are present in Smith and in Hayek too. But what I mean by the ethical side, right, is that a market society is good for us as human beings. It's the sort of society in which we can more fully harness our nature.
