The author looked up human pigmentation to see if that was an example of camouflage. Couldn't find anything. The other way you mentioned was actually physical structures. And these are also microscopic and they act like prisms. I think what it is ultimately is just an adaptation to the sun rather than trying to blend in with your environment.
