The Origins of Rousseau's Theory of Sovereignty
Rousseau isn't the first to be thinking about sovereignty as a kind of bottom up thing. For Rousseau, it is going to be mainly about eliminating this political inequality. And so he kind of makes equality the big ticket issue because he denaturalizes it. So if you denaturalize inequality, then that enables you to criticize it very severely.
