Containers vs Virtual Machines

Docker allows you to have isolated resources, meaning that you're not directly using your default environment or runtime environment in your computer. The main difference is that containers virtualize the operating system, whereas virtual machine are virtualizing the actual hardware. That means that containers are much more portable and that it's super easy to share with others so that they can use the same reproducible environment.
