The Importance of Strategy in Writing
A writer is much better served by getting a manager right off the bat because managers understand that their new writers are probably not going to sell for the first year. An agency or an agent has overhead to adhere to, they have a big list of known commodities to service so if it's you and another 40 writers, all of whom have already made money for this agent, they are going to have to service those clients first. A lot of things that a savvy writers can do for themselves without a manager include approaching the right production companies and creating buzz for themselves.
