Magellan's Journey to the Spice Islands

Three times Magellan asked for royal authorization and backing for the expedition. Each time King Manuel and his advisor said, no. Portugal already knew the location of the Malukas. So why worry about a western route to find the Spice Islands when you've already got an eastern one? With his plans rejected, in September of 1517 Magellan formally asked King Manuel if he could offer his services elsewhere. He headed off to Seville, his buddy Rui, Feliro, and Toe. Within days he had renounced his allegiance to Portugal and thrown his lot with Charles, the young king of Spain.
