I've never really understood Quirrell's tenure as professor. I think by faking it, it makes him look like an insignificant figure who couldn't possibly try to steal the stone. It does to your point, lent himself to be a little bit more insignificant in the grand scheme of things and make a thread come across as being a little bit weak. If you would have stayed attached to Quirrell, essentially Voldemort is teaching defense against the dark arts. So yeah, he Voldemort himself is in the post, which is what he's always wanted. Is this just a technicality? maybe. Maybe I'm thinking into it too much.
