The Future of Party Politics in China

In a moment of crisis it's very tempting to think that democracies are too slow, the democratic politicians are too affected by electoral cycles. So this is of course a very dangerous and very tempting idea. I'm also extremely skeptical about the efficiency of autocratic systems in the long run. The one thing that democracies deliver in a slow, uneven fashion is the necessity of consent. Getting consent is really painful. But ultimately if you are to actually do radical things that are going to end up with people making sacrifices and costing the money... You have to bring people with you. And although slower that's probably a surer, a more sustainable way to tackle climate change than trying to impose it from above
