The Discourse Around Thumba and Louise
On June 24, 1991, Time magazine enshrined a film which was pitched as 9-2-5 meets Easy Rider. The conversation about Selma and Louise that Time elevated was almost entirely about whether or not it was okay for women to do things that men had always done. In more than one column published over the course of several years, Playboy held this movie up as evidence that what feminists really wanted was not anything so prosaic as equal human rights, but instead a license to castrate and kill. Much like the discourse surrounding fatal attraction, we're going to talk about Thumba and Louise as it plays today and as it was perceived in its day.
