How to Design an Enzyme
We just don't yet understand enough really to rationally design an enzyme. It would be equivalent to asking somebody from 100 years ago to redesign a computer. I can look for an enzyme that catalyzes a similar reaction, and I can then essentially replicate evolution in a test tube. With the methods we have in the lab these days, you can probably do it in between three to six months, a year if you have a really difficult problem. This is becoming almost routine.
