How to Intubate a Patient

The safe answer is to consider doing it awake if you have any worry at all. But of course, doing an awake intubation takes more time and can be less comfortable for the patient. Still, let's just be very clear that if you're worried, if you're not sure you can ventilate the patient, then you want to keep them awake and breathing. The key there being ventilate. If I'm unsure, you have to often use a video laryngoscope because they won't necessarily have a slack jaw. They'll still breathe, but they will not care if you stick a laryngoscope in their mouth.
