After the death of Percy's first wife, a court ruled him morally unfit to raise his children. To try to improve his position, he and Mary officially married. She finished up Frankenstein and published it with Percy writing the preface. Funnily enough, they dedicated the book to Godwin. It was just as likely that she would have dedicated it to Godwin as Percy.
