Tim Keller: The modern identity is incredibly fragile. One of the assumptions is that you cannot let anybody else tell you who you are. Only you can decide what is right around for you and only you, in a sense, can validate yourself. If we're irreducibly relational creatures, we need people to validate us. Nobody knows your flaws more than you do. You desperately need other people, but you're not, no, no, I like myself.
