The Shadow Chancellor's Comments on Mortgages
Rishi Sunak and Jeremy Hunt have ruled out direct help for mortgage holders. But what else could they do to help people with mortgages? They're passing the bucks in the mortgage lenders who have agreed that they will offer forbearance to borrowers. What I can foresee happening is different lenders offering different solutions to different customers, so there isn't going to be as level a playing field or as transparent as it needs to be. We need to let go of this idea that you have to own your house. A sustainable model for renting would be much better. And don't forget renters - their local housing allowance has been frozen since 2020.
