How Did You Learn Japanese?

When did you start learning Japanese? When I was in high school. You have to excuse the ignorance about Japanese. It is regional, but there's also a standard language. A lot of Japanese people are almost filing a little in the sense of they speak their regional dialect and then they speak like standard Japanese.
