The Role of the Queen in World War I

The monarch's role as Supreme Governor of the Church of England is very important in World War I. It matters in terms of this is a devout country and the monarchy is seen in religious terms. The extent that then plays out on the Western Front is something we can question. Many soldiers during the war are coming from urban areas, where religious practice has declined.
