What Is the Difference Between Ordinary and Extraordinary Means?
Treatment must offer a reasonable hope of benefit and not entail excessive burden. Extraordinary means are those that in the patient's judgment do not offer areasonable hope of benefit or entails excessive burden. The Catholic tradition also speaks about weighing benefits in burdens, so often it's said that ordinary means are treatment in which the benefits outweigh the burdens.
