In the mid to late 2000s, many small producers saw the value in the global strategic reserve. But by the end of the 2008 season, the reserve was tapped out and it had run dry. This meant the federation lost their control of the supply and demand of maple syrup. Urgent focus was put on building the reserve back up again as soon as possible.
