I feel that you have a little bit of a selection bias over here, because you're talking about your family, and you come from a privileged background. But there are a lot of people who don't have the intellectual faculties, or maybe even the time to be able to perform this independent verification. The downside of this is true that maybe we become less trusting culture. And what does that do to the notion of trust, to the emotion of trust? Maybe the foundation of trust erodes.
