I think for me, the end goal, our kids aren't mathematicians. I remember pre-2014 National Curriculum, you had national strategies that outlined progression through things like reasoning and problem-solving. And so then they sort of took into account elements of communication, behaviours like systematicity,. The first thing you've seen in year three is a child who has been told to do something by their teacher when he or she hasn't done it before. It can be helpful to think about how we develop those behaviours so that we can support our pupils in approaching novel problems or non-routine problems.
