We see young people as not quite fully formed and a lot of times they use language in ways that are slightly rebellious. As adults we are constantly telling our kids to slow down when they're screaming down the mountain right? We're doing the same thing language so even though we might teach them to ski we don't teach them to go 100 miles per hour skiing like it used to be. Parents can rest assured that all of that finds its place but stigmatized or rebellious features tend to get dampened in their rate and they don't get used as much.
Language changes, and that's not a bad thing! This week, Adam is joined by sociolinguist Valerie Fridland to uncover how language is much more malleable than we're led to believe, and how the resistance against new slang often disguises an attempt to limit the influence of marginalized communities.
