The British people chose to leave the European Union, which I thought was rather shocking and potentially seriously damaging both of this country and to some extent also for wider Europe. That led me to ask, well, what really is going on? Is it now already the case that the financial crisis or some other developments are fundamentally destabilizing our societies? And I came across the concept of the democratic recession, which I write about. It has settled in me, it always has, a sense of the profound fragility of civilized life and the ease with which it can disintegrate. We've seen this, we saw it in the former Yugoslavia.
