Man cannot pass directly from sensation of thought he must take a step backward. The aesthetic is our first because it can induce indifference to the actual object and what it can do for us, which is on the way to the moral. If I'm going to be treating people as ends in themselves as opposed to merely a means to an ends, the art object is similar to not a means to any end. That's my first experience of that.
