Cells in organisms to day keep very tight control on the movement of their water contents. This is to prevent the water in their cytoplasm from harming the genetic material and proteins that it surrounds. Think about how the first cells could have evolved when they didn't have those structures in place yet. And again, this brings us back to the idea of places that would intermittently flood and then dry out again.
