From birth to about the age of three, a child should be given complete unconditional love. The true self ends up being filled with shame and that child ends up recreating what the narcissistic parent did now onto their own partner and family. One could end up more in line with having poor boundaries and not being able to monitor empathy or looking at the child then who becomes narcissistic like the narcissistic parent. It starts that early. You can see how early on behavioral problems, attentional problems, academic problems can be observed.
