The Origins of Viscosity
The Navier-Stokes equations have different terms that probably came in at different times. The right hand side, the del squared V thing is a representation of viscous flow. And I think that might have come in earlier than the representation of sort of inertial flow on the left hand side. But essentially what happens in the Navier- Stokes equations they describe with velocity and fluids are called kinematic viscosity. It describes the tendency of fluids to just damp out velocity.
