The Search for Immortality

Socrates agrees that Eros is a search. That it's a quest for what you lack the differences in the love object. What we really really want is to possess the good forever which means that we want some form of immortality now there is no personal immortality available to us your particular personal life is going to come to an end when you die. We all do unconsciously in Freudian language is to seek various substitute forms of immortality and Socrates says there are three of these. You can either seek a kind of immortality through children or by doing some glorious wonderful deed for which you get fame forever like Achilles or you can create lasting works of literature philosophy science bodies of laws and education and so on.
