The Hatchery in Whitby

In the last 15 years we've seen a 400% increase in the amount of lobsters being landed here in Whitby. That actually now puts us as the third largest lobster fishery in the whole of Europe to catch around about 100,000 lobsters every year. We're at Marine Conservation Charity and we're just trying to offset the amount that's being caught by releasing the juvenile lobsters to try and maintain that ecological balance. It all starts in the hatchery with the buried hens of the egg-bearing females. They call them buried hens because they look like they've covered in little black berries when they have thousands of eggs under their abdomen.
