Solon sought to deal with the grievances of the Hoplite middle class, which resented that for too long Athenian politics had been the exclusive province of the Patridae. In his new system, one's economic status was measured through agricultural produce,. The whole people were divided up into four property classes: Pentecazio medimnoi, Hippase, Zugatai and Thetes. It is important to note that income was calculated only in terms of produce from the land.
