i just assumed that when i taught about the british empire, i would be teaching students who learned about it and had some sense of it. And they have none like the they know as little about british prial history as most students in the us. So american exceptionalism is not so exceptional, it turns out. The word empire came back into vogue with the war on terrquot to crystallize the world view of islamic extremism. These thinkers have championed a vision of liberal imperialism that evokes the kinds of explicitly nestalgic, justificatory celebration of empire rarely seen in either public or academic culture since formal decolonization.
