What's the Lesson of the War in Germany?
There is a very deep streak of pacifism that came out of the second world war. The sense that germany, having brought such destruction upon the entire continent, must not in any way become a military power again. So we saw germany essentially tie its own hands in terms of security and defence by consistently spending very little. After the fall of the berlin wall, of course, germany was, then, as a unified country with an absolutely outsize omic presence once it got on its feet following unification.
