CHAPTER

Were Ter Yet?

Last week it was the east coast and western europe, and this week is the pacific northwest. There's expected to be even more heat next week. And let's remember what's going on in india. They've named a heat wave in a in in spain. It's all really scary, and it's pretty relentless.

Well okay, so let me understand, yeah that's great, thank you for that understanding, exactly, my understanding Krebs cycle is just like, it is the thing that produces AT, or I guess it's the thing that produces ATPs because what it does is it takes, you can get the membrane, you make a voltage across it and then you, when you try to suck, when you do the ATP creation process, it kind of that is where the energy comes from and you don't like take the ADP and like push it a little, you know,
Speaker 1
across. So the ATP is usually called the universal energy currency. Yeah, yeah. And I like to think of it as like a coin that you put it, so a protein is like a slot machine I suppose and the ATP is like a coin and you put the coin in the slot machine and it does what it does, you know, it changes its state momentarily, you know, protein, it changes its confirmation when ATP binds to it or something. And then it hydrolyzes, it splits off so you have ADP and a phosphate that goes over there and the protein changes its shape again. So basically life is powered that way but then the question becomes, well where does all the ATP come from and the answer is, well, ATP synthesis is driven by this electrical charge on the membrane. Yeah, we just
Speaker 2
created by the. The
Speaker 1
electrical charge on the membrane is driven by respiration, which is from burning food in oxygen. So you know, you don't have any. He's created by the Krebs.
Speaker 2
I guess the Krebs cycle is the thing that needs as input. It needs, I guess, yeah, the Krebs cycle takes as input these glucose inputs as output ATP. Is that roughly? Is that right? Is that basically right, but that way of seeing it kind
Speaker 1
of clouds the issue because really what it's doing, the Krebs cycle as such is pulling out hydrogen and CO2. The hydrogen is being fed to oxygen to electrify the membrane. That membrane now is used to make ATP. But it's used for lots of other things as well. And in bacteria that's electrically charged membrane is used to fix CO2. It's used to take CO2 and convert it into organic molecules. It's driven by the electrical charge on the membrane. And so the bits that I kind of want you to focus on is not the ATP so much as the carbon dioxide, the hydrogen and the charge on the membrane. And those are the working parts that really matter. And you can spin it one way and you're effectively burning hydrogen in oxygen to generate a charge and you spin it the other way and you're taking in hydrogen, binding it onto CO2 and using the electrical charge to power that. So it's exactly the opposite. And that's what's beautiful about these vents is they've got an electrical charge. They've got CO2, they've got hydrogen and you've got the system which is converting gases inorganic gases from a sterile planet into the building blocks of life. Cool.
Speaker 2
Okay.
