How Many People Lived in Pompeii Before Vesuvius Exploded?

The town of Pompeii was buried by Vesuvius in 79 CE. Over two days the eruption killed everyone in the area. This meant that everything and everyone in Pompeii was preserved in ash. From this tragedy, archaeologists have been able to learn much more about what life was like for ordinary Roman citizens. But it doesn't give us a perfect window into everyday life because volcanic eruptions aren't an everyday thing.
