The latest stats showed that 17 million adults in the us. Have a diagnosible alcohol use disorder. Not every substance requires a medical detox, so some people would have come in without going to detocs first. As miserable an experience as detoxing from opiates can be, it's actually not dangerous. Second most dangerous would be the family of medications benzodiasopine, like zanax or clan pin.

"Addiction doesn't have to be a bummer!," quoth addictionologist Erin Parisi, who has some uplifting and hopeful tales from her professional life.
