As a parent, you have to estimate what the economy is going to be like in 50 years. Kevin Kelly has a classic article saying that you can be as niche as you like. In fact, it's good to be niche. You only need 1000 people to love it along with you and you can make a very solid living at it. If you love it, then it doesn't matter whether somebody hires you or whether you do the stupid thing on the internet.
