Mona Lisa Returns to the Limelight
Mona Lisa was stolen from the Louvre on August 21, 1911. The painting had been hidden in a Paris apartment for more than two years. Italian police arrested and extradited Peruja after he confessed to his crime. Mona Lisa returned to the Louvre with great fanfare at the end of January 1914.
