Democracy Versus Totalitarianism

Dewey says society reproduces itself by passing knowledge, customs and habits. But beyond that, would we want to talk about democracy as a healthy society thinking of society as an organism? How useful is that? Dewey: There's no such thing as culture if it's not transmitted. And so this question about democracy versus totalitarianism, the mechanism for passing that along is identical.
