The Mayor's Christmas Ball
Those little fairies in their short skirts of silken gauze looked like fairies. It seemed absurd to imagine they were Johnny Mullins the washer woman son and Polly Flanders the charwoman's little girl. The mayor's daughter who had chosen the character of a goose girl looked like a true one that one could hardly dream she was ever anything else. She now looked very sure and stoved and brown just as if she had been accustomed to 10 geese in all sorts of weather. Bo Peep's eyes looked red with a weeping for the loss of her sheep but there never was anything like the fun at the mayor's christmas ball.
