'Mc Kinley's Ambivalence
On december tenth, 18 98, the treaty of paris was signed. Cuba became an american protectorate. And the us. Took possession of porto rico, guam and all the philippines in exchange for 20 million dollars,. or 660 millions in to day's money. Filippino insurgent leader, emilio aginaldo, was crushed by mc kinley's new order. He knew that if congress failed to ratify the treaty, mc kinley would be forced to consider aginaldo's declaration of independence. Strong opponents in the senate were rising up to object tomc kinley's colonialist ambitions.
