In the 19th century, many evangelicals believed that they had a personal relationship with Christ and could secure their own salvation. Most evangelical Christians believed that that meant creating a thousand years of peace to presage Christ's return. There was also a sense among many evangelical Christians that it was their role to sort of help uplift a sinful world.
