IBS is not a diagnosis of exclusion. It's a diagnosis you can make right in the clinic with an appropriate history and physical exam. The idea that every child with chronic abdominal pain needs a blood panel, stool testing and an endoscopy is not only a huge waste of resources but also introduces much more potential for atrogenic harm. These are all things that would not go with irritable bowel syndrome.
